Roy Carlson never intended to become a novelist—not until a single phone call with his youngest daughter changed the course of his life. What began as a casual conversation about a Dungeons & Dragons character in early 2024 ignited something deeper: a spark that would grow into The Dragonguard Chronicles. In that moment, a lifetime of passion—for ancient civilizations, global mythologies, and the noble, guardian-spirits of dragon lore—coalesced into a story he could no longer keep to himself.

 

Raised among the rugged landscapes of the Rocky Mountains, Roy grew up surrounded by the kind of wild beauty that inspires adventure. As a soldier, instructor, and leadership speaker, he traveled widely, collecting stories, perspectives, and the quiet belief that there is always more to this world than what we see. Those experiences, blended with the timeless influence of classic authors like Heinlein, Asimov, Stoker, and Herbert, shaped a narrative voice both cinematic and deeply human.

 

Roy writes with one guiding hope: to transport readers. He wants them to feel the rush of stepping into another world, to stand side-by-side with heroes wrestling love and loss, courage and fear, knowledge and power. Through characters who are human—and not entirely human—he explores the instincts that define us all: survival, loyalty, the hunger for meaning, and the fierce hope that we might become more than we are.

His vision for the series reaches far beyond the pages: he imagines a future where the Dragonguard rise on the big screen, where their battles and bonds unfold in epic cinematic form, and where readers become participants in a living myth.
